Agate is in the quartz family, composed primarily of microscopically crystallized silica (SiO2). It has curved bands, or zones, of differing color. Some agate slices are treated with compounds and heated to give them brilliant blue, green and red colors. These specimens have been sawed and polished. Origin is South America. Ages 8 and up. Picture is representative of the specimen you will receive. Each rock is unique and will vary in shape, size, appearance and color. Some specimens may be larger than 4 inches.
